
Learn the History of the AuSable & Oscoda Region
Oscoda is located on the eastern shore where the beautiful AuSable River flows into Lake Huron. This land has a rich of history. The AuSable-Oscoda Historical Museum [www.ausableoscodahistoricalsociety.org] offers a variety of exhibits depicting Indian artifacts, ship wrecks, logging, the Paul Bunyan legend, lighthouses, the AuSable River and its dams, and much more. The gift shop has numerous books about the local history as wells as the 1880 birds eye map and old time toys. Summer hours from Memorial Day to Labor are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 11-4.
Wind your way up Heritage Route 23 along the Sunrise Coast to discover other historical sites. A must see stop is the Lumberman’s Monument Historic Site that tells the story of the 1800’s lumber history. Another unique way to discover the region’s heritage is by bike. The self-guided Greenbush Bike Route is an 11-mile and 17-mile loop that winds through the quaint streets of Harrisville where you’ll find numerous historic buildings.
