Sip and Savor Along Michigan's Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail
Michigan is home to 100 wineries drawing from 2,700 acres of vineyards, making it the fifth largest wine-producing state in the U.S. Michigan also ranks fifth in the country for the number of craft breweries, which stands at about 300. The state's burgeoning wine and craft beer scene is steadily gaining popularity, and vacationers enjoy seeking out locally produced libations. When you stay with us at Huron House, the perfect way to sample northeastern Michigan wine and beer is by taking a trek on the Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail.
The Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail is situated along Michigan's eastern shoreline, running parallel to the breathtaking Lake Huron. This trail was born from the desire to showcase the region's unique terroir and the dedication of local winemakers and craft brewers to produce high-quality beverages. A small group of boutique wineries, tasting rooms and craft beverage producers make up the trail, and you can stop in for tastings during your Lake Huron getaway.
Modern Craft makes its home—and its homemade fruit wines—in Au Gres, Michigan, a town about 40 minutes south via US 23. At Modern Craft, you'll be in for a wine experience that breaks free from the traditional red and white wines. Unlike most wineries, people are encouraged to mix Modern Craft wines, put them on ice, or create your own cocktails with them. Their unique wine concept is gaining a following that they now have six tasting rooms across the state. Sample unique flavors like Grapesicle, Grapefruit and Fudge, and you'll quickly learn why Modern Craft believes it's worth being different.
If you take US 23 about an hour north of Oscoda, you'll come to Alepena, Michigan, home to Thunder Bay Winery. This winery produces a range of white, red, fruit, ciders and dessert wines that showcases northern Michigan winemaking. From a dry, oaky Chardonnay to light-bodied, sweet Devils River, choose from more than two dozen wines on their menu. For $6, a wine tasting includes six samples, or you can opt for a flight of four wines for $12. Thunder Bay Winery has seasonal outdoor seating, live music and special events throughout the year.
Alpena is also where you'll find Presque Isle Farm Cider, a place that that celebrates the vast potential of the apple. They don't make the sweet ciders you find on grocery store shelves. PIF Cider is spontaneously fermented until all the residual sugar is gone, resulting in a mostly dry experience with a range and complexity equal to wine. Their taproom has 12 rotating taps of dry cider — all made from 100% Michigan apples. Coming up on October 21, check out PIF Cider's inaugural PIF Cider Wassail Anniversary with cider, food and live music to celebrate one year in business.
As you explore additional stops along the trail and indulge in delectable libations, take some time to soak in the natural beauty that surrounds the Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail. Lake Huron's pristine waters and sandy beaches provide a serene backdrop for your journey. Along the way, you can explore hiking trails, visit lighthouses and take in the charming small-town vibes that make the area so appealing.
