Tawas Uncork'd: A Sampling of Michigan's Finest Wines and Ales
With 140 wineries across the state of Michigan, and nearly as many craft breweries, it would be a spectacular feat to sample all the wines and ales that the Great Lakes State has to offer. Make plans to attend Tawas Uncork'd, and you can check off more than two dozen from your Michigan winery and brewery checklist. Each year, this festival brings together some of Michigan's best beverage producers for a full day of sips and samples. Mark your calendar for 2023's event on Saturday, Aug. 5, from noon to 5 p.m.
Harbor Park in East Tawas provides a stunning waterfront setting for this one-day wine and ale extravaganza. Located just 11 miles south of Huron House, the park's lush green spaces and panoramic views of the lake provide the ideal spot for enjoying a day of "Sippin' on the Sunrise Side of Michigan" (the festival's slogan). This is the 14th year for Tawas Uncork'd, and each year the festival gets better with age. When it began, there were eight participating vintners; in 2023, there will be more than two dozen wineries and breweries on site to share samples of their Michigan-made libations.
There will be 15 wineries represented at Tawas Uncork'd. Among them are Chateau Chantal from Traverse City, known for its European-style wines; Fenn Valley Vineyards with its well-balanced wines produced in West Michigan; Amoritas Vineyards on Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula bringing its 100% estate-grown products; and Burgdorf's Winery from just outside Lansing with its award-winning True Michigan wines. You'll get a chance to meet the vintners from these four wineries and others, who are all eager to share their insights into their winemaking processes and the distinct characteristics of each varietal. This personal touch fosters a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into every bottle, and you may stumble upon new favorites that you wouldn't have encountered otherwise.
In addition to wine, you'll have a chance to sample craft beer from 10 of Michigan's top breweries. Pair your wine and beer with something delicious from the numerous food vendors that will be onsite. Live music, raffles and vendors all add to the fun, inviting atmosphere. Tawas Uncork'd is presented by the Friends of the East Tawas Library as a fundraiser to support the local library's building and programming needs.
