Beachfront Movies and Starry Skies in Oscoda, MI

It’s not every day you get to watch a movie on the beach, but you can at the Oscoda beachfront after dusk for the Starry Nights Summer Movie Series. The 2016 live-action version of the beloved tale, The Jungle Book, will be playing at the Oscoda Beach Park on September 3^rd, and movies are played every Wednesday and Saturday… for free! Bring your own lawn chair, snacks, and refreshments for this relaxing evening.

Wander Through the Waterfront Arts Festival

Get outside along the shores of Lake Huron to view unique art made by the Tawas Bay artists before summer says its goodbye. From epic landscape photography to acrylic equestrian paintings and handmade baskets, the Tawas Bay Waterfront Fine Arts Festival is host to a variety of art mediums sure to satisfy anyone with a creative edge to their person. Tawas City hosts the 55^th Annual Tawas Bay Waterfront Fine Arts Festival this August, a media exhibit where all exhibited items must be original work and handcrafted by the artist.

The River Road – National Scenic Byway

Those that have a connection to nature or just want to get outside with the family in the summer months will want to experience the nearby Huron National Forest which includes unique landscapes and features, such as one of the National Scenic Byways. The River Road National Scenic Byway, a pre-European Native American travel route, is a 23-mile road that parallels the Au Sable River. It stretches from Lake Huron into the Huron National Forest that is famous for its scenery, biology, history, and its efficiency as a major route in the transportation of white pine lumber.

Couples searching for an intimate dinner together—that also includes a historical experience as well as scenic Great Lakes views—should head to Tawas City, found about 25 minutes south of Oscoda. The “1857 Island Lighthouse Dining & Wine Tasting Cruise” to Charity Island in Saginaw Bay departs from Browns Landing in Tawas City as well as Caseville Municipal Harbor. The cruise offers an immersion in Great Lakes maritime history, dinner at the lightkeeper’s house with a magnificent view of Lake Huron, and a relaxing return trip timed to catch the sunset.

Learn the History of the AuSable & Oscoda Region

Oscoda is located on the eastern shore where the beautiful AuSable River flows into Lake Huron. This land has a rich of history. The AuSable-Oscoda Historical Museum [www.ausableoscodahistoricalsociety.org] offers a variety of exhibits depicting Indian artifacts, ship wrecks, logging, the Paul Bunyan legend, lighthouses, the AuSable River and its dams, and much more. The gift shop has numerous books about the local history as wells as the 1880 birds eye map and old time toys. Summer hours from Memorial Day to Labor are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 11-4.

For those who not only crave the challenge of varied landscapes but also appreciate a golf outing amid lush forests, the Oscoda region has several public and semi-private courses to choose from.

Red Hawk Golf Club is located in East Tawas about 20 minutes south of Oscoda. It is a public 18-hole course designed by renowned architect Arthur Hills. The course offers mature forests and elevation changes that challenge the most accomplished player but are still enjoyable for the novice.

Bird watching in the Springtime

With the arrival of spring, it is a great time to get outdoors and view Mother Nature, especially her birds. The area offers a variety of opportunities. The annual Tawas Birding Festival will be held May 19-22, 2016 at the Tawas Bay Beach Resort & Tawas Point. This is considered the biggest little birding festival in the Midwest. During the 2015 festival over 200 species of birds were recorded including Kirtland’s Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, numerous raptors, shorebirds and more. If you are an avid bird enthusiast this is a must-attend festival.

National Eggs Benedict Day

Did you know that April 16 is National Eggs Benedict Day? The Huron House Bed & Breakfast is known for its delicious breakfasts and has quite the reputation for its Eggs Benedict served every Sunday. In fact, on April 16th, one of the innkeepers is scheduled to be on ABC-TV 12 in Flint, to share the tasty recipe of poached eggs, ham, and hollandaise sauce with viewers. While everyone has a different version of this flavorful dish, the Huron House tops it off with a stuffed hash brown in the shape of a flower.

Calling all Canoe Racers!

The Canoe/Kayak racing season is almost here! The season kicks off with the 21^st annual Klondike Canoe Race on Saturday, April 2 in Oscoda. The race starts at the mouth of Van Ettan Creek where it meets the AuSable River. Racers will head upstream to the Van Ettan Dam and then back downstream to the bridge on F41 at Chemical Bank. Cost to race is $5 and registration begins at 11:00am with the race starting at 1:00pm. Allow approximately an hour to complete the race.

Eagle Run Trail Groomed for Fat Bikes

What are fat bikes? Bikes with oversized tires designed to travel over all kinds of terrain such as mud, sandy beaches, bogs and snow. A fat bike is not about speed, but rather allows you to enjoy the outdoors at a slower pace. Over the years, they have grown in popularity with some enthusiasts trading in their mountain bike for a fat bike. Here in Oscoda, the Eagle Run Trail that is part of the larger Corsair Trail system has been widened for multi-use with cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
