Huron-Manistee National Forest

Within the Huron-Manistee National Forest you’ll find miles of unique trails that transverse from coastal sand dunes to towering pines and hardwoods. It’s a naturalist’s dream. Begin your day at Eagle Run that provides a loop trail system with marked trails that vary from level to moderate rolling hills. The Highbanks Trail is a short 6.5 mile hike along the AuSable River and continues to Sidtown.  You’ll see the most dramatic views of the AuSable River and will travel over the same ridges that loggers used to roll their timber into the river. The trailhead is 15 miles outside of Oscoda at Iargo Springs and parking is available. Iargo Springs is considered a holy place by Native Americans and offers a breathtaking view of the AuSable River from a 30’ high observation deck.   Along the way you’ll pass the Canoer’s Memorial, dedicated to all paddlers who challenge the AuSable River, and the historical Lumberman’s Monument that honors the lumbering era. Summer hikers often have the opportunity to see bald eagles and other wildlife. Pack a lunch and enjoy the outdoors at one of the many picnic tables you’ll find along the way.
