Ski the Corsair Trails, MI
As the gateway to the Huron half of the Huron-Manistee National Forest, Oscoda has access to the endless miles of trails. In the winter season, we take advantage of the snowfall here in Oscoda and Au Sable and take to our favorite forest trails like the Corsair Ski Trail System. Known as one of the Midwest’s most scenic trails, and certainly the best in the state, the 28 miles of Corsair’s one-way pathways are a perfect seasonal setting for a peaceful excursion in the winter months.
Nordic skiing and snowshoe hiking are great active adventures that are worth the effort; Corsair’s panoramic views of the famous Au Sable River Valley are unlike any other. Skiers of all levels also head to the Corsair system in winter for its varied terrain, described as a third up, a third down, and another third level terrain. Its gentle rolling hills and alternating descending and ascending sections make for an enjoyable and easygoing rollercoaster ride through the snow. Of the system’s three trailheads, the Corsair and Silver Valley Trailheads will be your easier options with the Wrights Lake Trailhead offering a more challenging skiing experience. Each trail is groomed regularly and offers the best cross-country skiing in the Lower Peninsula.
Perhaps something else brought you here, but the Corsair trails are things that will keep you coming back. With breathtaking views of the pristine, snow-covered landscape of the Au Sable River, dozens of lakes frozen over, rolling hills covered in the dense forest and teeming with the wildlife of the Huron-Manistee National Forest, this will be a special winter you will never forget.
The Corsair Picnic Area Trailhead is on the west side of Monument Road. Wrights Lake Trailhead is off Tuttle Road, on the east side of Monument Road. Silver Valley Trailhead can also be found on the east side of Monument Road. Each trailhead has free parking.
