Autumn in Oscoda: Our Favorite Ways to See Fall Colors in Michigan
Once the leaves start changing, the landscape around Oscoda looks completely different. The green forests along the Au Sable River turn shades of gold, orange, and red, while the evergreens stay deep green underneath. You can see the color from a hiking trail, from the car, or from the water, and you don’t have to drive far from Huron House to find it.
Here are a few of our favorite places to see fall colors around Oscoda and Tawas.
Drive the River Road National Scenic Byway
When the leaves start changing, River Road is one of our favorite drives around Oscoda. The 22-mile route follows the Au Sable River west from Lake Huron through the Huron-Manistee National Forest, with plenty of places to pull over and take in the views along the way.
The road winds through a mix of hardwoods and evergreens, so you’ll see everything from brilliant gold and orange leaves to deep green pines. The byway is lined with excellent pull-offs and overlooks where you can stretch your legs and take in the view.
- Foote Pond Overlook: Sitting on a high sand bluff about nine miles west of Oscoda, this short walk from the parking lot opens up to a breathtaking panorama of blue water framed by autumn hillsides.
- Champagne Hill: A local favorite along River Road, with a sweeping view of the Au Sable River valley. From the overlook, the hillsides stretch out below in a patchwork of autumn color, with the river winding through the middle.
- Lumberman's Monument: Further west, this historic site offers sweeping views of the Au Sable River valley. Beyond the elevated overlooks, you can explore short walking trails and interpretive exhibits that share the story of the area’s 19th-century logging history.
- Westgate Overlook: Near the western end of the byway, Westgate offers another quiet, high-elevation view looking out over miles of uninterrupted fall canopy.
Hike the Highbanks Trail
If you prefer to experience the colors on foot, pack a jacket and head for the Highbanks Trail. The path hugs the high bluffs above the Au Sable River, giving you an ever-changing mix of intimate forest walks and sudden, dramatic views across the river valley.
The entire trail stretches about seven miles, but you don't have to tackle the whole thing. Even a shorter out-and-back section gives you the chance to walk beneath a canopy of changing leaves and catch views over the Au Sable River valley.
Wander Through the Eagle Run Trail System
For an easier, flatter walk, Eagle Run is a great choice. The trails wind through the woods right near the Au Sable River, and the canopy overhead creates some beautiful color as autumn sets in.
It’s the perfect spot when you just want to step outside for a bit, breathe in the cool air, and enjoy a quiet walk in the woods without committing to a huge hike.
See the Colors from the Au Sable River
One of the best ways to experience fall in Michigan is from the water. In autumn, the Au Sable River takes on a different character as the surrounding forest changes color and the leaves reflect on the water.
If you’re visiting early enough in the season, you can rent a kayak or canoe through Oscoda Canoe Rental or bring your own and spend a few hours paddling beneath the forest canopy. The river is particularly beautiful in fall, when you can see the changing landscape from a completely different perspective than you would from the road or a trail.
And if you’re visiting later in the season, fall is also a popular time for salmon and steelhead fishing on the Au Sable. You don’t have to be experienced anglers, either! Just casting a line from the bank can be a surprisingly fun, peaceful way to spend a quiet morning together on the river.
Stop at Iargo Springs
Iargo Springs is worth a stop any time of year, but the changing forest makes the short walk down to the springs especially pretty in autumn. Boardwalks and stairs lead through the woods to the spring-fed waters below, where several small streams flow toward the Au Sable River.
Take your time on the way down and look around. The experience isn’t just about the springs themselves. The surrounding forest is part of what makes this stop so enjoyable in the fall.
Head North to Tawas Point State Park
If you want to spend a morning in Tawas, head to Tawas Point State Park. The park sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula reaching out into Lake Huron, surrounded by sandy beaches, coastal trees, and water in every direction.
The fall color here has a completely different feel than the river forests inland. You get a mix of lake breezes, shoreline views, and autumn leaves, along with a great view of the historic Tawas Point Lighthouse from the beach. Just keep in mind that the park opens at 8 a.m., so save this one for mid-morning or afternoon.
Let the Fall Colors Come to You
You don’t always have to go chasing scenery while you’re here. Sometimes the best view is right outside your door. You can watch the season change right from your private deck overlooking Lake Huron, wander down our quiet stretch of beach, or just sit outside with a hot cup of coffee and enjoy the cooler weather.
If you do decide to get out and explore the trails and overlooks, come back to your suite afterward, slip into your private hot tub, and watch the evening settle over the lake while the temperature drops around you.
When Is the Best Time to See Fall Colors in Oscoda?
Fall color doesn't arrive all at once across Michigan. The U.P. changes early, while Southern Michigan peaks much later.
Around Oscoda and the Au Sable River valley, you can generally expect the leaves to begin changing in late September, with the brightest colors often appearing in early to mid-October.
The exact timing depends on the weather each year. A warm fall can keep the leaves on the trees longer, while colder temperatures can bring the season along more quickly. If seeing peak color is a priority for your trip, check the local forecast and fall-color reports before you head out.

Plan a drive along River Road, spend an afternoon on the trails, or head toward Tawas for a walk along the lake. Then come back to Huron House, warm up in your suite, and enjoy the quiet that makes autumn such a special time for a getaway.
