Canoe the Coast of Lake Huron
Enjoy the cool waters of the Au Sable River and Lake Huron this spring on the Oscoda-Au Sable Blueway. As part of the larger 20-mile Huron Shores Coastal Water Trail that runs from Tawas Point to Greenbush, the Blueway allows visitors to paddle the coast of Oscoda, Cedar Lake, and the lower Au Sable River and its ponds. The Oscoda stretch of Michigan’s Sunrise Coast is a scenic and serene adventure for anyone looking to have an unforgettable experience out on the water.
The Blueway provides opportunities to not only paddle down the coast from Tawas to Greenbush but also to access the lower reaches of the Au Sable River, known as the Au Sable River Canoe Area. From the mouth of the river in Oscoda, paddling upstream, there are five damns and ponds; the ponds are Foote Dam Pond, Cooke Dam Pond, Channels Dam Pond, Loud Dam Pond, and Alcona Dam Pond. Find the boat ramp access point at the mouth of the Au Sable River on the southern side.
Designated a National Wild and Scenic River, the beauty of the Au Sable River is unmatched year-round. Its clear water, consistent flow, and attractive landscape surrounding it make it one of the best, and most scenic, canoeing destinations in the Midwest. Stunning views of the winding river and panoramas of the surrounding landscape for miles have made the Au Sable River famous, but your view, up close and personal, from the water of the Au Sable itself will be unforgettable. The watershed of the river is also famous for being a habitat for Bald Eagles and the endangered Kirtland’s Warbler, Trumpeter Swans, and the Common Loon. Pack a picnic to eat on the banks of the river or Lake Huron as you search for the endangered species that make the Au Sable their home.
