The Best Places to Fish for the 2018 Free Fishing Weekend
Just a short time more and it’s Free Fishing Weekend in Michigan! On June 9th and 10th, take advantage of all the great lakes and rivers Michigan has to offer. Pack you waders, bring your rod, and book your room at the Huron House. It’s about time you escape and enjoy the peaceful sport of fishing. Oscoda couldn’t be a better place for it, too; we have a reputation for walleye fishing and the waters of the Au Sable River also attract trout, salmon, and perch. To help you keep track of everything the local region has to offer for your fish-filled getaway during Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend, we’ve outlined some the hot spots as well as trusted charter boats in the area.
Places:
Au Sable River: The Au Sable River is just as famous for its trout as its scenic beauty. If you’re not kayaking its length and exploring its gentle passage through some of the Midwest’s most picturesque scenery, you should be fishing in its waters. The best spots are the six hydroelectric dams and the ponds they’ve made.
Foote Pond, Cooke Dam, Loud Dam: These spots are great fishing year-round for walleye, bluegill, pumpkinseed, crappie, bass, channel cat, and northern pike. In the summer or hot day in spring, it’s a great place for a picnic and some swimming.
Van Etten Lake: A local favorite, Van Etten Lake can provide some of the best walleye fishing in the area during the spring and summer months. You can find the boat launch across from the Yankee Air Force Museum.
