Attend the Tawas Point Migration
There’s no denying it; Michigan’s Sunrise Coast has one of the most unique and diverse ecosystems in the world. The wetlands and massive expanses of forest have made the region a mecca for biodiversity and a haven for migratory birds. It’s also one of the most picturesque landscapes in the Midwest, with the Au Sable River, Lake Huron, and views that will take your breath away—who knows…as you look across the valley from the vista you find, you may even catch sight of a bald eagle!
Birdwatchers and bald eagle admirers alike are bound to attend the Tawas Point Migration this May 17-19, when thousands of birdwatchers (and millions of birds) flock to Tawas Bay. The natural birding hot spot at Tawas Point, which draws songbirds, shore birds, and raptors, is worthy of celebration. The forests and wetlands of Iosco County have long been a vital part of the ecosystem for migratory birds and birders are proof that our majestic aerial neighbors are truly something to be wondered at. Whip-poor-wills, red-headed woodpeckers, trumpeter swans, and the endangered Kirtland’s warbler can all be found locally and the event offers high-quality birding opportunities.
Take a guided walk on Loon Lake Nature Park Trail or discover each of Oscoda’s Sunrise Coast Birding Trail Sites. Visit Tuttle Marsh at dusk and then search for whip-poor-wills in the dark. Or make your own way and take a self-guided tour of scenic overlooks for bald eagle viewing. Click here for a guide through the Au Sable River Valley that will take you to the most likely spots to catch sight of our national bird.
