There's something magical about the Sunrise Side of Michigan during the holidays. While Oscoda is usually a summertime vacation destination, our quaint beach town on the coast of Lake Huron really comes alive in the Christmas season with twinkling lights, beautifully adorned evergreen trees, colorful holiday decor and festivities throughout the town. Top it all off with a little snow (or a lot) and it's a winter wonderland!
Hear the word "igloo," and you might think of a frozen dome of ice and snow. But that's not how we'd describe the special beachside igloo we have at Huron House. Think warm and cozy with the most incredible views of Lake Huron. Our igloo isn't made of ice, of course. It's a heated and lavishly decorated intimate space, right on the beach, where you and your loved one can snuggle together under warm blankets in the glow of fairy lights. It’s almost like cuddling up in a tent, except a million times fancier.
All of our public parks here in Oscoda offer something special. Some are on the sugar-sand beaches along Lake Huron, while others provide trails through the woods for hiking and biking. We have parks perfect for picnics and parks best suited for observing wildlife and taking in nature's beauty. But there's one park that's special because of its mission to honor those who fought and died in service to our country – Veterans Memorial Park of Northeast Michigan.
If your idea of an epic fall getaway includes a scenic drive to witness spectacular fall foliage that explodes into reds, oranges and golds, then we have the leaf-peeping road trip for you! Hop in your car, buckle up and follow the U.S. 23 Heritage Route, which stretches 200 miles along the Sunrise Coast of Michigan.
Michigan is home to more lighthouses than any other state, with 129 lighthouses along thousands of miles of coastline. These beautiful beacons of light and history hold the stories of the lightkeepers who watched over them and the sailors who were guided by their light. Would you be surprised to learn, then, that some of them might be haunted?
With so many incredible places to take a hike near Oscoda, the Highbanks River Trail through the Huron National Forest is surely a favorite of ours and our guests at the Huron House. It's truly a special place with sand dunes, forests, springs, monuments, amazing Au Sable River views – and it goes on for miles. If you're looking to surround yourself in nature and tranquility, check out the Highbanks Trail during your next Lake Huron getaway.
People come to Lake Huron to vacation along its wonderful stretches of pristine coastline with sugar sand beaches and crystal blue water. As you look out into the endless blue horizon, you might not realize there are some amazing sights to see below the water's surface.
Soulful music with its roots in African American spirituals, the blues is an iconic music genre that speaks to the essence of our being. When we think of the blues, we think of great musicians like B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Billie Holiday, just to name a few. But when you stay with us at Huron House this summer, you can check out some amazing modern-day blues talent at the annual Tawas Blues by the Bay Festival.
For six decades, the Tawas Bay Waterfront Fine Art Festival has brought artists from across Michigan and the country to the beautiful shores of Lake Huron's Tawas Bay. On August 6-7, Shoreline Park in Tawas City will once again be filled with art exhibits, demonstrations, food and live music for the festival's 61st year, making it one of the longest-running art festivals in Michigan.
Blueberry season is something we look forward to every summer in Michigan. This time of year, fresh Michigan blueberries star in our scratch-made breakfasts at Huron House – in pancakes, scones, muffins and more. Our state ranks third in the nation in blueberry production (behind Washington and Georgia), growing more than 30 different varieties of blueberries and harvesting 92 million pounds annually. That's impressive!
