Best Sunrise Spots Near Oscoda, Michigan
If you've ever wondered how Michigan's Sunrise Side earned its name, all it takes is one early morning on the Lake Huron shoreline to understand.
Unlike Michigan's west coast, where evenings steal the show, the eastern shoreline greets each day with spectacular sunrises over the water. The first light reflects across the water, the sky shifts through shades of pink and orange, and the beaches remain wonderfully quiet before the rest of the day begins.
The best part? You don't have to plan an elaborate adventure to experience it. Some of the most beautiful sunrise views are just minutes away, making it easy to turn an early morning into one of the highlights of your stay.
Here are a few of our favorite places to watch the sunrise near our adults-only lakefront bed and breakfast.
Huron House Private Beach
If you're staying with us, you already have one of the best sunrise seats in Michigan.
Our private stretch of Lake Huron shoreline faces due east, giving guests an unobstructed view as the sun rises directly over the water. There's no searching for parking, no crowds gathering on the beach, and no rushing to claim the perfect spot before everyone else arrives.
Instead, wrap yourself in one of our plush robes, pour a cup of coffee, and stroll down to the beach, or simply settle onto your private deck and watch the colors change from the comfort of your suite.
There’s a reason sunrise elopements have become so popular at Huron House. Our couples love the idea of exchanging vows with only the sound of the waves, the morning light, and the people who matter most around them. The quiet beauty of a Lake Huron sunrise creates a naturally romantic backdrop without the need for a large production.
Oscoda Beach Park
Just a few minutes from Huron House, Oscoda Beach Park offers another beautiful place to welcome the morning.
Walk out toward the end of the pier for wide-open views of Lake Huron or find a bench along the shoreline to watch the sun climb above the horizon. Early mornings are peaceful here, with only a handful of walkers, anglers, and early risers sharing the beach.
The park is just a few blocks from downtown Oscoda, so you can stop for a much-needed coffee at Sunrise Kava Cafe before continuing the day’s adventure. Or, if you'd rather ease into the day a little slower, head back to Huron House, where a gourmet breakfast and fresh coffee will be delivered right to your room.
Huron Sunrise Park and Three Mile Beach
The name says it all. Three miles north of downtown Oscoda on US-23, Huron Sunrise Park and Three Mile Beach sit side by side along one of the most undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the area. More than 2,600 feet of sugar sand beach with no development behind it, and at that hour of the morning, very few people on it.
The Huron Sunrise Trail connects the two parks along the shoreline, so after the sun is up you can walk as far as you want in either direction.
East Tawas State Dock
The East Tawas State Dock offers peaceful harbor views as fishing boats gently rock in the marina and the first light reflects across calm water. The dock extends out over the bay, putting you over open water with a clear view of the horizon as the sun clears the lake.
After soaking in the view, walk across Newman Street into downtown East Tawas, where local cafés, bakeries, and boutiques begin opening for the day. Pick up breakfast and coffee, browse a few locally owned shops, or simply enjoy a walk along the waterfront before making your way back to Huron House.
Iargo Springs Overlook
If you'd rather trade the beach for a forest view, make the drive to the Iargo Springs Overlook. The elevated viewing platform looks across the Au Sable River valley, where early morning light settles into the forest below, and mist occasionally rises from the river. Enjoy the calmness before the trails get busier later in the day.
Afterward, follow the wooden boardwalk down to the natural springs below. The descent includes nearly 300 stairs, but the cool, crystal-clear springs and peaceful forest make it well worth the effort. If you're ready to continue exploring, the nearby Highbanks Trail offers several miles of scenic hiking along the river bluffs.
Au Sable River Mouth
Where the Au Sable River meets Lake Huron, you'll find one of the most peaceful places to welcome the day. As the sun rises over the lake, the river often mirrors the changing colors of the sky, creating a beautiful contrast between the calm inland water and the gentle waves along the shoreline.
It's a wonderful spot for a quiet morning walk, and you may spot herons, ducks, or even a bald eagle moving along the shoreline and riverbanks. After sunrise, stay awhile longer to watch kayakers, anglers, and fishing boats glide across the water.
Sturgeon Point Lighthouse
Built in 1869, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse sits on a rocky stretch of Lake Huron shoreline where the only sounds in the morning are the waves and birds overhead. As the first light catches the white lighthouse and surrounding trees, it creates one of the most stunning scenes along Michigan's Sunrise Side.
While the lighthouse and museum won’t be accessible this early, the surrounding beach and grounds are still a beautiful place to watch the sun rise before the day's visitors arrive.
A Sunrise Worth Waking Up For
People travel across the country to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan, but those who discover the Sunrise Side quickly realize mornings here are just as unforgettable.
Whether you choose the historic setting of Sturgeon Point Lighthouse, the sweeping overlooks along the Au Sable River, or simply step outside your suite at Huron House, each sunrise feels a little different. Some mornings arrive with brilliant oranges and pinks. Others begin beneath soft pastel clouds or a light mist drifting across the lake. No two are ever exactly alike.
The best part is that, at Huron House, one of Michigan's most beautiful sunrises is waiting just outside your door. Wake to the sound of the waves, watch the first light appear over Lake Huron from your private deck or our secluded beach, then head back inside as breakfast is delivered to your room.
Book your stay and discover that sometimes the perfect day begins before most people are even awake.
