Take an Adventure on the Au Sable River

Take a Day Trip Harrisville

With only one traffic light and more forest than just about anything else, Harrisville is a secluded Michigan city nestled along the outer edges of the Huron-Manistee National Forest. Two state parks and a refuge harbor for the Coast Guard, as well as its Great Lake shores, make this city your iconic All-American “old-fashioned lake vacation” spot.  Start your journey north from the Huron House at dawn if you’re in the mood to catch a breathtaking sunrise over Lake Huron on your way into the town of Harrisville.

Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend

Taking place across only two weekends a year, Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend for the winter season is February 18th and 19th. I know it’s cold out there, but you’ll have to wait all the way until mid-June for the sunny summer weekend! What this means is that for the following two days, license fees will be waived and even out-of-state residents may enjoy fishing on all species of fish in the inland and Great Lake waters of Michigan state.

Perchville USA: Tawas’s Annual Winter Festival

Get outdoors and down to Tawas this coming February for the annual Perchville USA, the epic Winter Festival held February 4th to February 7th that hosts an eclectic mix of varieties from swimming to chili. Initiate yourself in the frigid waters of Lake Huron with the legendary tradition, the polar bear plunge. Make sure someone is waiting for you with a towel or two at hand and then head to the Hospitality Tent, behind Harbor Park and next to the State Dock, where $3 adult beverages are served.

Hike the Corsair Ski Trail

Get ready for the winter in Michigan. The Corsair Skiing and Hiking Trail makes up over 26 miles of hiking and is a great winter adventure into the snow-covered Silver Valley, surrounded by 120,000 acres of the Huron National Forest, and only a short drive south from the Huron House. Each of Corsair’s network of trails has an entry point only about seven miles northwest of East Tawas.
